Lucian Msamati
A definitive voice of the global stage and screen.
Building from the Ground Up
Born in the UK and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, by Tanzanian parents, Lucian's journey is one of intentional return and global influence.
In 1994, he co-founded Over the Edge, one of Zimbabwe's first multi-racial professional theatre companies. The company performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and produced original plays — including Born African, written by Lucian.
Establishing Over the Edge proved that artistic rigour could create its own gravity. This movement from the stages of Harare to the National Theatre forms the narrative behind Ndoto.

A Shift in the Landscape
In 2010, Lucian was appointed Artistic Director of British-African theatre company Tiata Fahodzi. In 2015, he made history as the first Black actor to play Iago in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Othello.
His definitive portrayal of Antonio Salieri in Amadeus at the National Theatre solidified his reputation as a top-drawer artist capable of carrying the world's most demanding narratives.
Lucian was born at St Thomas' Hospital, London on 5 March 1976 and studied French and Portuguese at the University of Zimbabwe. He moved permanently to the UK in 2003 and now resides in London with his family.
From Stage to Global Screen
From the brutal power plays of Gangs of London to the epic scales of Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials, and Taboo, Lucian brings a psychological precision that has made him one of the most sought-after performers of his generation.

"I must also say that part of the space I was granted in terms of playing Iago came from having a director of colour. It meant that the team had my back."
